An Old-Fashioned Potpourri
Lots of ingredients go into this mixture to give it its classic fresh floral fragrance.
Ingredients:
140 drops rose geranium essential oil
1 dram plus 45 drops sweet rose essential oil
1 dram plus 45 drops heliotrope essential oil
1 cup dried calendula flowers
1 cup dried cornflowers
1 cup dried bachelor's buttons
1 cup dried calcatrippae
1 cup dried lavender buds
1 cup dried yellow rose petals
1 cup dried red rosebuds
1 cup dried pink rosebuds
1 cup dried jasmine flowers
1 cup dried pink statice flowers
1 cup dried scented geranium leaves
2 cups dried lemon verbena leaves
1 Tablespoon bruised allspice berries
1 Tablespoon bruised cloves
1/4 cup cinnamon, broken into small pieces
1/2 teaspoon ground nutmeg
2 Tablespoons gum benzoin (optional)(fixative)
1 cup dried cornflowers
1 cup dried bachelor's buttons
1 cup dried calcatrippae
1 cup dried lavender buds
1 cup dried yellow rose petals
1 cup dried red rosebuds
1 cup dried pink rosebuds
1 cup dried jasmine flowers
1 cup dried pink statice flowers
1 cup dried scented geranium leaves
2 cups dried lemon verbena leaves
1 Tablespoon bruised allspice berries
1 Tablespoon bruised cloves
1/4 cup cinnamon, broken into small pieces
1/2 teaspoon ground nutmeg
2 Tablespoons gum benzoin (optional)(fixative)
Instructions:
1. Combine the orris root, lavender, rose geranium, sweet rose and heliotrope oils and allow them to set until the orris root has absorbed all of the oils. (about 1 week).
2. Combine the flowers, leaves, and spices (except for the gum benzoin) with the orris root/oil mixture.
3. Store in a glass jar for 6 weeks, shaking or stirring every other day to blend.
4. For a more lasting quality, add the gum benzoin powder, distributing well, after the first 5 days of aging.
